Conmen create fake website, collect money for jobs in Wipro
Officials from IT major Wipro have filed a complaint with city cyber crime police against unidentified miscreants for allegedly creating a fake website in the name of the company and collecting money from job aspirants in northeastern states, including Assam and Manipur.
The complaint filed on September 4 stated that the miscreants opened bank accounts in different northeastern states and were asking job seekers to deposit money for a placement in Wipro. “Fraudsters have used the Wipro logo to make the website look more authentic. Thinking the website is genuine, many youths have been applying for jobs and giving money in the name of security deposit,” the complaint said. The jobs offered include junior software analysts, technical support, language experts and hardware experts.
Police suspect at least 60-80 victims have deposited money — anywhere between Rs 25,000 and Rs 1 lakh each — into the accounts.
“A team is leaving to these states for investigation. Our first job is to freeze the bank accounts so that no more job aspirants fall prey,” a senior officer said.
